ALMATY, April 12, 2022 – Government officials and education professionals discussed issues of achieving learning recovery and addressing the learning crisis, transforming education systems, and achieving increased and better investment in education at the online Sub-regional consultation meeting.
The sub-regional consultation meeting, which took place in preparation for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Education Minister’s Conference ( APREMC II , 5-7 June 2022, Bangkok, Thailand) was co-organized by UNESCO and the UNICEF, under the umbrella of the Learning and Education 2030+ Networking Group.The goal of the event was to identify current and future challenges and make recommendations for contextualized priority action areas and strategies for learning recovery and transformation of education systems, taking into consideration Central-Asia’s reality, with the overall objective to accelerate progress towards SDG 4.
“We are here today to listen to you about existing and future challenges in your country and your region, and – importantly – to gather your proposed recommendations for specific and contextualized policy priority areas and strategies for action for learning recovery and transformation of education systems with the overall objective to accelerate progress towards SDG 4.” said Ms. Margarete Sachs-Israel, Chief, Section for Inclusive Quality Education, Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, UNESCO Bangkok during her Opening Remarks.
The online consultation meeting included an introductory presentation of a conducted situation analysis on the effects of and responses to COVID-19 on the Education Sector in Central Asia which was facilitated by Cambridge Education.
Discussions of the meeting focused on national policy priorities and solutions for achieving learning recovery, building inclusive, resilient, and flexible education systems, and ensuring adequate funding, equitable allocation, and efficient spending in the education sector.
Representatives of education ministries, as well as, representatives of civil society organizations, youth representatives, and development partners from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, discussed challenges, opportunities, good practices, and lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic and related learning crisis.
Consultation participants agreed on recommendations on priority action areas and strategies for learning recovery and transformation of education systems. These valuable recommendations will inform the discussion of APREMC-II, which follows the theme ‘Education Recovery and Transformation towards more Responsive, Relevant and Resilient Education Systems: Accelerating progress towards SDG 4-Education 2030’.
