Closing the gender gap in science

The full and equal participation of women and girls in science can play a vital role in ensuring the diversity of scientific research, expanding the circle of talented researchers and bringing new perspectives to solve modern problems. Convinced of this, the UNESCO Almaty Office organized a celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in order to immerse students to the wonderful world of science.

In recent years, women's participation in research, especially in leading positions, has varied from region to region and has constantly changed depending on specific fields of activity and age groups. The gender gap in science has narrowed, but the gap between awareness of one's own scientific potential and aspirations in this field remains large.

Science and gender equality are vital in ensuring sustainable development. However, women and girls are still excluded from participating in science: women make up less than 30% of researchers worldwide.

In an effort to eradicate prejudice, the UNESCO Office in Almaty, in collaboration with the WeArt Creative center, organized an event on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in order to promote the interest of young girls in scientific activities. This year, the event brought together unique and strong-minded girls aged between 15 and 17, including those from vulnerable backgrounds.

In addition, several young female researchers, who participated in the first female glacier expedition in Central Asia, shared their experience and knowledge, inspiring young participants for scientific achievements.

Held in an informal setting, the event enabled young participants to share their dreams and aspirations. Here, each girl found support and inspiration for herself. The meeting ended with warm wishes and gifts for each participant.

To solve the urgent problems of the 21st century - from climate change to technological failures - it is necessary to mobilize all the resources available to humanity. That is why the world cannot afford to abandon the potential, intellect and creative ideas of thousands of women who, for one reason or another, become victims of deep-rooted inequalities or prejudices.
