Training session for UNESCO's Education Staff in the Field

11 October 2019

On 2-4 October 2019, the UNESCO Desk for Education for Emergencies administered a Training on Education in Emergencies in Geneva, Switzerland, for education staff members in UNESCO Field Offices. Meirgul Alpysbayeva, Education National Professional Officer at UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, also participated in the training.

The training provided participants with valuable information and guidance on UNESCO's response plan for education in emergencies; the protection of education from attack; and the contribution of the Education Sector to the implementation of the Global Compacts on Refugees and Migrants.

As education for people on the move, including crisis-affected and displaced populations has been identified as one of the three thematic priorities for the Education Sector, the training aimed at developing and reinforcing capacities in delivering and providing requisite tools and resources to support the implementation of a comprehensive approach for the ED Sector.

The training apprised participants of an in-depth overview of aspects corresponding to education in emergencies. In particular, participants learnt about the guiding principles for UNESCO's engagement, namely how and when the Organization should engage. It provided education staff with an opportunity to engage with education partners and gauge how to effectively implement education projects in areas affected by disaster or conflict.

This three-day intensive course allowed participants to liaise with colleagues at the DEE as well as partners who contributed to the training. It featured presentations from a robust set of speakers, from both within UNESCO and external partners.

For many of the participants, this was their first orientation on the topic of Education in Emergencies (EiE). They expressed their happiness with the training due to the relevance of the subject in their daily work. They commended the DEE for organizing such an event and expressed the need for such sessions to take place regularly.
