2 June 2017

UNESCO national workshop on “Awareness-raising and capacity-building of communities for the conservation of the Sulaiman-Too World Heritage Site” was held from 23 to 26 May 2017 in Osh, Kyrgyz Republic, with financial support from the Embassy of Switzerland in the Kyrgyz Republic for the staff of the Sulaiman-Too National Museum complex and other historical and archaeological properties of Kyrgyzstan (Batken, Burana, Shah-Fazil, Uzgen), as well as archaeology experts and local authorities.

The main goals of the workshop were:

1. Capacity development of Sulaiman-Too National Museum staff to strengthen practical and technical skills;
2. Introduction to the new technologies and methods of documentation and demonstration;
3. Discussion on new Management and Action plans of the World Heritage site “Sulaiman-Too”, on monitoring system of the historical and cultural heritage properties in Kyrgyzstan and on the concept of the Mountain Museum.

Interesting and informative materials were delivered by professional and experienced speakers. Participants were especially inspired by presentations of experts from the “Archaeological Expertise” company and from the Kazakhstan Tourism Association.

During 4-day intensive training discussions were focused on non-destructive research methods on historical and cultural monuments, principles of monuments’ documentation and the methods of demonstration and presentation of materials (stereo photos, 3D modelling, photogrammetry, using drones and digital camera, publications, etc.). A separate block reviewed the possibility of publishing virtual models and creating an online museum. This method will create conditions for rapid and unhindered access to findings and monuments. For ordinary visitors to virtual museums, it is possible to access a huge number of exhibits located in different countries. This method of studying objects is more informative due to the receipt of related information and the possibility of detailed inspection of the finds, as well as absolutely safe for museums. Participants also reviewed proposals for a new Management and Action plans of the “Sulaiman-Too” World Heritage property.

Many participants also mentioned that they are lacking this kind of capacity-building workshops and requested the organizers to conduct more meetings of such kind. Some participants would like to use knowledge gained in their professional daily work and share new information with their colleagues. They also stressed on the necessity to mobilize and involve more actively youth in protection of local authentic heritage.
