UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty and UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) conducted a 3-day Digital Instructional Design workshop for a group of national educators in Bishkek on 29-31 May 2019.
The creators improved their understanding about socio-emotional learning and learned about the MGIEP digital platform used for interactive, fun, inclusive and effective learning. Representatives of teacher training institute, methodologists and practitioners applied their skills in short 30 minutes lessons presented in the end of the workshop.The local professionals will develop more lessons in the course of the ongoing UNESCO project “Developing Online Curriculum to Mainstream Cross-Cutting Competences for Sustainable Development in Kyrgyzstan”, supported by Estonia. UNESCO Almaty will provide international expertise for developing learning modules in all five thematic areas (“Global citizenship”, Reducing inequality: demographic issues and migration”, “Conservation of water and other resources”, “Healthy lifestyle”, and “Media and Information Literacy”). MGIEP will continue its support with an initial pilot in 10 schools in Bishkek and in the regions, which the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic is going to nominate.
Following the workshop, Ms. Aisulu Sulaimanova, Education Officer of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office in Kyrgyzstan, and Mr. Saurabh Roy, Chief Technology Officer at UNESCO MGIEP, met with Ms. Gulmira Kudaiberdieva, Minister of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic (see photo below).
G. Kudaiberdieva noted that, given that social and emotional competencies are often referred to as 21st century skills and are part of PISA assessment, in which Kyrgyzstan will participate in 2024, it is important for Kyrgyzstan to support teachers in developing these skills in students.
UNESCO Almaty informed the MoE that the platform interface would be translated into Russian and Kyrgyz for the operation of the pilot schools. In the future, according to the results of the pilot, the possibility of extending the experience to all schools will be considered.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister thanked UNESCO experts for their work in the education sector of Kyrgyzstan and assured that the Ministry is interested in continuing cooperation with UNESCO and MGIEP on digitalization of education and support of teachers.
